Great Green Job of the Week: Director of Development & Communications – Urban Green

Urban Green Council, the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a nonprofit organization working to advance sustainable building in the New York City area. Urban Green seeks a Director of Development & Communications who is highly motivated and enthusiastic about growing the green building movement. This senior position presents a unique opportunity with a marquee environmental organization.

The Director of Development & Communications will be responsible for devising, implementing, and managing a comprehensive development program, securing support from foundations, corporations, government sources, members, major givers, and special events. In addition, this Director will lead strategic communications designed to expand Urban Green’s constituency, create community, and raise the organization’s profile.

The Director of Development & Communications reports to the Executive Director and supervises two full-time staff members: a Communications Manager and a Development Assistant. As part of the executive team, this Director will also participate in board meetings, board development, strategic planning, and organizational development. Nimble and rapidly growing, Urban Green requires a Director of Development & Communications who is fast, flexible, resourceful, and pro-active. The position will provide the qualified candidate broad latitude to shape the field of green building and impact the future of New York City.

Development Responsibilities Include:
• Conceptualize and implement annual development plan to secure over $1 million in contributed income in FY10
• Lead foundation fundraising; research and identify prospective foundation funders; develop proposals and budgets in collaboration with program staff; ensure appropriate recognition and timely reports
• Lead sponsorship program; cultivate and steward approximately 50 current sponsors; research, cultivate, and solicit new prospective sponsors
• Direct membership program, including renewal and acquisition campaigns to grow membership (currently about 1,500 members); manage quarterly membership meetings
• Secure government grants; research and identify potential local, state, and federal grants; develop proposals and budgets in collaboration with program staff; ensure appropriate recognition and timely reports
• Work together with the Board’s Fundraising Committee to create a high-level membership society; host quarterly stewardship/cultivation events with the goal of generating major gifts from individuals
• Work together with Board Fundraising Committee to plan and stage annual Gala;
• Provide oversight to activities of Emerging Green Builders (EGB), the organization’s young professionals
• Manage member database (using Convio); maintain and establish systems, in keeping with standard best practices
• With Chair of Fundraising Committee, prepare for and manage regular committee meetings; prepare bi-monthly reports to the Board of Directors

Communications Responsibilities Include:
• Conceptualize and implement annual communications plan to build community, increase membership, and raise the organization’s profile
• Provide strategic direction to Communications Manager in order to strengthen Urban Green’s online presence, which currently includes the website and weekly e-newsletter (circ. 10,000+), as well as to launch use of newer media (blogging, Twitter, social networks) to make Urban Green a valued source of green building news and information, as well as to build a lively online community
• Manage relationship with public relations consultant and interactions with the press to raise Urban Green’s public profile
• Write and edit collateral materials describing the organization’s work
• With Communications Manager, provide brand stewardship to strengthen and protect the Urban Green identity
• With Chair of Communications Committee, prepare for and manage regular committee meetings; prepare bi-monthly reports to the Board of Directors

Qualifications/Skills:
• At least 5 years work experience in fundraising
• Proven ability to secure funding
• Excellent writing and interpersonal skills
• Bachelor degree required
• Ability to work well in groups, including with volunteers
• Understanding of current environmental issues, green building and the real estate industry
• Ability to manage multiple projects, including those that may involve consultants
• Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
• Creativity, energy, confidence, integrity, initiative, and independence
