Great Green Job of the Week: Natural Resource Specialist, CT

The Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the sound use and management of natural resources through technical assistance and education, seeks a full-time Natural Resource Specialist to assist communities in protecting and managing natural resources.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities range from designing conservation projects to physical work in the field. The Natural Resource Specialist conducts field research, plans and implements projects, compiles data, writes reports, does education and outreach, uses a variety of computer applications, and supervises interns and volunteers. Specific responsibilities include:
* Reviewing erosion and sediment control and storm water management plans, wetland impact studies and other environmental documents prepared by municipalities or developers, and writing detailed review letters with recommended improvements;
* Providing on-site assistance to municipal staff and private landowners to address natural resource management concerns, e.g. erosion, drainage, flooding, stormwater management, invasive plants, wildlife;
* Collaborating with stakeholders to develop and implement watershed management and restoration plans;
* Planning, facilitating and coordinating on-the-ground restoration projects, e.g. riparian buffers, stormwater retrofits, aquatic habitat improvements;
* Developing natural resource/open space management plans;
* Providing training for municipal staff and land use commissioners about erosion and sedimentation and stormwater management, and conducting workshops for professional groups or members of the community;
* Developing educational publications and displays;
* Assisting with grant writing and management, budgeting, planning and reports; newsletters and other District publications; and annual fundraising events.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a Masters degree in Environmental Science, Soil Science, Geology or related field, and 1 year relevant experience. 3 years of experience may be substituted for an advanced degree. Must be a self-starter with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with local and state natural resource laws and regulations; field experience in evaluating natural resource concerns; experience in reviewing site development plans; public speaking experience; proficiency in computer database programs and data analysis; and knowledge of GIS preferred. Soil scientist, wetlands scientist or CPESC certification is desirable.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
