Top 10 Favorite EarthFirst Posts of 2009

Ah, New Year’s Eve. It’s time to say goodbye (though some would prefer good riddance) to 2009 and welcome 2010 with open arms, stupid hats and copious amounts of alcohol. We had some really amazing times in the past year – like President Obama’s inauguration – and really disappointing ones (did someone say Copenhagen?).
We also had, if we may say so ourselves, some pretty awesome posts on EarthFirst.com. Check out this list of our favorites:
7 Green Ways to Lose Friends and Alienate People
You may take a lot of pride in being deep, dark green – but what you see as shining examples of eco-sainthood may come off to the rest of the world as rude, condescending and downright disgusting. Nobody wants to be friends with a sanctimonious bastard that looks and smells like he just rolled out of a dumpster.
Profits Before People: 7 of the World’s Most Irresponsible Companies
Money isn’t everything – or is it? To most corporations, making a profit is goal number one – but some of those companies take it way too far, sacrificing the health of the planet and its inhabitants for a bigger bank balance. Far too many corporations turn a blind eye to the consequences of their destructive, exploitative practices. The worst of them are committing atrocities that go beyond the realm of objectionable into criminal, dumping toxic chemicals without regard to public health and employing child labor.
The Meat-Eating Environmentalist: A Contradiction in Terms?
So, you’re an ardent environmentalist. You wear organic clothing, live in a small energy-efficient home, ride your bike to work and always remember your reusable bags when shopping. But for all of your efforts, your carbon footprint is still huge – thanks to your diet, which is full of hamburgers, steaks and ham sandwiches.
Smug Self-Important San Francisco Stereotype Springs to Life
There’s a certain stereotype that San Franciscans just can’t seem to get away from. Smug, Prius-driving, Whole Foods-patronizing with a my-shit-don’t-stink attitude that is unleashed upon anyone who isn’t flawlessly green 24 hours a day. That stereotype doesn’t actually fit most residents of this beautiful California city, but it came to life in a maddening episode of ABC’s reality show ‘Wife Swap’ in the form of Brit transplant Stephen Fowler.
All the Cool Kids Use Hand-Crank Gadgets
Solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy are certainly cool, but when it comes to small household items, sometimes the best form of energy you can use is your very own muscle power. Hand-crank gadgets and gear are a low-tech way to unplug many items in your home, from blenders and food processors to washing machines and even cell phone chargers.
America’s Top 10 Worst Man-Made Environmental Disasters
Humans have turned screwing up the earth into an art form, skillfully wreaking havoc on the land, water and air through negligence, lack of concern or even the greedy desire to profit at all costs. From knowingly dumping toxic chemicals into a stream where children play to willfully ignoring the potentially devastating weaknesses of their own facilities, men have managed to create destruction on earth that rivals the wrath of Mother Nature herself.
9 Incredibly Stupid GOP Statements on Climate Change
They’re known for being largely anti-science, and many of their numbers still insist that global warming either isn’t real or isn’t caused by man. Paul Krugman declared the GOP to be “the party of stupid” last August, and they haven’t done much to dissuade the public from agreeing with him since then. From declaring the planet already saved – by Jesus – to comparing kids in the climate movement to the Hitler Youth, Republicans really do say the darndest things.
Seven Fun and Creative Eco-Friendly Business Cards
Why stop at printing on recycled card stock when you could make your business card super eco-friendly, creative and memorable all at once? After all, business cards are a dime a dozen – most of them go into your wallet and aren’t taken out again until you’re cleaning it out and ready to throw them away. These seven green business card ideas are definitely outside the box, making an impression that will last much longer than most.
Corporate Bottled Water Takes the Greenwash to Twitter
“Bottled water is the greenest, healthiest drink on the shelf!” repeats @BottledH20Babe on Twitter over and over and over again. Is she a bot? No, but she is a lame greenwashing tool of the bottled water industry. Why would someone like this, whose sole purpose is to make inane claims about the earth friendliness of bottled water and argue with anyone who believes differently, be on Twitter in the first place?
Simple. The International Bottled Water Association is getting scared.
7 (More!) Environmental Problems That Are Worse Than We Thought
How have humans managed to royally screw up the world? Let us count the ways. We already covered mammal extinction, the ocean dead zones, collapsing fish stock, destruction of the rainforest, polar sea ice loss, rising CO2 levels and the fact that there’s way too many of us in the first place. But those certainly aren’t the only pressing environmental problems facing the earth – here are seven more. And yes, most of them are our own damn fault.
