College Students Seek Out More Green Classes

Students at colleges and universities across America aren’t just going green in their daily lives – they’re soaking up as much education about sustainability and other green topics as possible.
University officials made more green-themed classes available in recent years in response to what they saw as a ‘green trend’, and were stunned by just how popular those classes continue to be.
From Sign On San Diego:
Higher-education experts said schools don’t want to be left behind in the race to lure bright minds and their parents’ checkbooks. Recent budget cuts have temporarily slowed the expansion of these programs, but administrators said programs focusing on environmental sustainability will continue to flourish.
“There is an element of surprise in how quickly it has grown,” said Peter Adriaens, who teaches at the University of Michigan and is president of the national Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. “You look at the applications and the essays and it’s very clear that the students are voting with their feet.”
Enrollment for his class about clean-tech entrepreneurship increased from 12 students in 2007 to 90 this academic year.
“It’s a shift in the way we think about education. We can’t teach economics anymore without teaching ecology — what does it mean to live well in a place?” said Jane Teranes, associate director of the Environmental Systems program at UCSD. “We have gotten into some serious environmental problems that are going to require some very creative students to help solve, and our education system is responding to that.”
Just another example of college students making things happen – you guys are more powerful than you know. This isn’t just about making small personal changes or even greening college campuses, this is about preparing for a sustainable future.
